The Education Exchange Welcomes New Teachers
Published on: Sep 28, 2009
September 28, 2009 – Wakefield, RI – The Education Exchange, a non-profit provider of adult education and job skills training programs throughout southern Rhode Island, will begin its Fall Semester with three new adult education teachers.  With the new teachers on staff for the Fall Semester, the Education Exchange will offer evening classes in Wakefield and North Kingstown, in addition to the daytime classes currently offered in Wakefield and day and evening classes in Westerly.

Carole Duffy has joined the Education Exchange staff as a pre-GED instructor.  Ms. Duffy has a B.A. in Secondary Education, History from Rhode Island College and an M.A. in Special Education, K-12, with a sixth year in Administration & Supervision from Central Connecticut State University.  After thirty years of teaching Special Education in grades 7-12, Ms. Duffy joined the Education Exchange in November 2008 as a volunteer tutor.  As an Education Exchange instructor, she will ensure that students with more extensive educational needs receive the instruction and tools necessary to achieve their goals, in and out of the classroom.

James Gorham, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Rhode Island, has extensive experience teaching and tutoring adults.  In addition to teaching a range of writing and literature courses at the college level, Mr. Gorham has tutored high school students preparing for the SAT and taught English as a Second Language at Progreso Latino in Central Falls.  He earned a B.A. in English from the University of New Hampshire and an M.A. in English from Northeastern University in Boston.  He joins the Education Exchange staff as an Adult Secondary Education (GED Preparation) instructor and will be teaching an evening class at the Education Exchange in Wakefield.

Amanda Raitano, a doctoral candidate at Walden University in Minneapolis, MN, has Elementary Education Certification, a B.S. in Human Science and Services, and an M.A. in Education from the University of Rhode Island.  She has extensive experience as a GED instructor and teaching in elementary and middle school classrooms.  She will serve as Family Literacy instructor for the Education Exchange program at Davisville Elementary School in North Kingstown.

The core of the Education Exchange program is adult literacy, GED preparation and testing, and classes for English Language Learners.  To meet the evolving needs of workers and businesses, the Education Exchange also offers computer classes, Microsoft Certification, and job skills training programs.  The addition of Ms. Duffy, Mr. Gorham, and Ms. Raitano to the Education Exchange teaching staff increases the organization’s ability to help more students gain the critical skills they need to secure and retain employment, support themselves and their families, and make valuable contributions to the Rhode Island economy.

There are still some spaces available for the Fall Semester adult education/GED preparation programs.  Computer classes and employment workshops and seminars take place throughout the semester.  For more information about the Education Exchange and its programs, please visit www.EducationExchangeRI.org, call 401-783-0293 or send email to info@EducationExchangeRI.org.
