Literacy and ESOL
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has drafted the following definition: "Literacy is the ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate and compute, using printed and written materials associated with varying contexts. Literacy involves a continuum of learning to enable an individual to achieve his or her goals, to develop his or her knowledge and potential, and to participate fully in the wider society."

The Education Exchange has the programs and classes that enable people and organizations to reach their goals so they too may participate more fully in the “wider society”.

To effectively communicate in today’s high technology world, a solid writing foundation is essential, especially in the workplace.  Writing is as much a skill as it is a talent, but without good foundational skills, talented writers are often overlooked.  Learners are encouraged to generate motivation in their efforts at writing by addressing topics that are important to the learner.

Individual instruction and small classes are available for adults wanting to improve basic math skills. Math instruction includes performing basic functions and solving word problems drawn from daily life situations.  Math instruction employs group work, and hands on activities, and uses the student’s goals to establish best teaching methods.

The students’ level of basic academic skills is determined by the scores obtained in reading and mathematics on nationally standardized CASAS (Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System) tests.  Those students scoring at the beginning or intermediate levels of basic education attainment will be placed in appropriate ABE classes.
