It is obvious that low literacy rates are directly related to crime, unemployment and poverty. Here is something not so obvious. The adult illiteracy rate in America is 40%. In Rhode Island it is even higher at 47%. That means that almost one out of every two RI residents is considered illiterate.

Shocking, isn’t it?

Most of us assume that only major metropolitan areas have to deal with widespread illiteracy. Most of us could not imagine that the pristine beaches, wealthy summer homes and historic charm of South County obscure a frightening reality. Illiteracy is a very real and prevalent problem in our area.
